So why do you have it in so many jars? Do you have to let it set for a while? Yeah, I'm an egg nog noob, at least when it comes to making it from scratch.

Here is the recipe, for those who are interested:
INGREDIENTS
For the eggnog:
* 12 large eggs
* 2 cups granulated sugar
* 1 cup heavy cream
* 1 quart (4 cups) whole milk
* 1 liter (about 4 cups) bourbon, such as Jim Beam
* 1/2 cup Myers’s dark rum
* 1/2 to 1 cup good Cognac or other brandy
* Pinch kosher salt
* 1 whole nutmeg
INSTRUCTIONS
For the eggnog:
1. Separate egg yolks and whites. (Reserve egg whites for another use, such as Egg-White Frittata with Shrimp, Tomato, and Spinach.) Combine yolks and sugar in a large mixing bowl and whisk until well blended and creamy.
2. Add cream, milk, bourbon, rum, Cognac (use the good stuff), and salt, then stir.
The aging process:
1. Bottle it right away and refrigerate it until it’s ready. (An old liquor bottle works great, as do 22-ounce bail-top bottles, available in brewing supply stores. My grandfather keeps the eggnog in the garage for 3 weeks, stirring occasionally, then bottles it—but aging in the garage is not recommended because the temperature can fluctuate.)
2. It’s traditional to wrap the bottle in aluminum foil, shiny side out, together with a fresh nut of nutmeg tucked into the foil for grating later. Keep refrigerated for at least 3 weeks, or up to a year if you can.
To serve (optional):
1. I serve aged eggnog on the rocks with some freshly grated nutmeg on top. If you want to serve the eggnog in the traditional way, pour it into a punch bowl. In separate bowls, whip 10 egg whites and 1 1/2 cups heavy cream to soft peaks and fold them into the eggnog. Serve in punch cups, garnished with freshly grated nutmeg.
Here are my personal recommendations for it:
1) When you're whipping the egg yolks after adding the sugar and milk, make sure you do a good job. Don't leave any chunks, make sure it's smooth.
2) I recommend bottling it and aging it for sometime, if you do bottle it, mason jars work great, just be sure to boil them and the lids to kill bacteria before ladling the nog into them. Also make sure the bottles have cooled so as to not cook the egg nog.
3) My friend and I saved three bottles from last year when we made it, I recommend doing so too. It's fun to have aged egg nog, and the aging process changes the flavor by mellowing it out and making it sweeter. This christmas we're going to sample the year and a month aged egg nog side by side with they month aged egg nog.
4) If you do bottle it, keep in a refrigerator or other constantly cool place and wrap with aluminum foil to keep out light. Check on the bottles every once in a while by seeing if the contents of a bottle have turned yellow or has developed bubbles. This means it went bad, and just toss the contents of the individual bottle. If no other bottles went bad it's fine to drink.
5) Sheriff Pony fun fact: by volume, this eggnog is 40% alcohol, and will put a healthy fire in the belly. It is also easy and fun to make with friends. Enjoy.

It can't be 40% alcohol. The strongest alcohol in there is 40% and it's mixed with other things so it's really more like 20% alcohol. You'd need to be using 160 proof to have this be 40% alcohol.

I didn't double check my friends math, but i did round up his calculation. Also, I said by volume it was, so we were taking the amount of volume that was alcohol divided by the total volume of the nog, which turned out to be about 39 and change percent alcohol. Now an individual serving size is roughly12-15% alcohol, but it's hard liquor so 8 oz of egg nog is about the equivalent of 2 beers.
