Hey guys i know u are all major computer geeks so maybe u can help me in my decision to upgrade from my FPOS radeon x1950 GT :D

Basically I am just wondering which would be better... a nvidia geforce 9800 GT or a nvidia 8800 GT...

Which one is better? People keep tellin me that they have the same chip or some chit, so idk which one to buy. Im leaning more towards the 9800 GT atm, but maybe you could gimme some advice?:confused::confused:

I'm a gaming geek, not a computer geek so unfortunately I have nothing to contribute to this discussion, I don't even know what video card is in my computer.

However, 9800 is a bigger number than 8800 and they both GT's so with my amazing intellect I think 9800 is better!

The real thing I would be looking at, because I'm a cheapskate, is difference in price!

If you can afford about $209 then a geforce 260 is a good buy - it overclocks quite nicely

The "magic" card of old was the 8800GTX, I'd get it over the other two you mention - it's hard to find but only about 150 or so bucks now and it's an incredible overclocker

Ok the 9800 GT it is lol! not only is it cheaper but apparently it runs cooler or something... I hope it fits in my case :|

Look at stream processors, frequency and speed for the memory and such and whichever one has more processors and speed or the best balance is the one for you :)

::hugs his 8800 GTX OC::: :D

If you get Ntune you can manually force the GPU fan speed to 100 % which is a good idea, the 8 serries ran really hot, 9 apparently does not run as hot but I dunno about that.

The new 260 / 280's are also good ones to look into but do cost a little more.

ATI HD 4850 is better. the one with the dual slot cooler from MSI.

Edit: Steam games tend to favor ATI cards.

I'm thinking about doing a geforce 260 now, but it's hard to decide I might do 4850 (or above) because it looks like radeon is going in the right direction with the cards now. It's a really tough choice, I'm glad I've got a few more weeks to think and review some more

Are the geforce 280's the new thing.

9800GT is better than the 8800GT in terms of performance. Keep in mind that the 9800GT is a big card, so you will need a pretty big case. Same goes for certain 8800GTs.

At the moment, but I am treating the 9 and 2xx serries like the FX (5k) serries. They seem to be pumping out too many modles too fast, they need to slow down and advance some more to make it worth my money to upgrade.

ATI has great cards and high frequency and better HTPC potential at the moment (and usually it seems), but overall I have found Nvidia to still have better all around gaming performance.

Again take a look at your budget and crap as many stream processors, GPU ram and clock speeds into that equasion and you should be happy which ever camp you fall into :)

the nvidia stuff has given me driver trouble for years so when i saw ATI for better bang for th e buck i jumped on it. the 9800 is just a 8800 shrunk down and clocked a little bit higher. the 260 shows very little extra performance gain. the only benifit from nvidia right now is SLI.

the ATI 4850 and 4870 are the fastest cards out for Source right now. i have a 4850 (the MSI one with the big cooler - much better than stock) and i can run most games on full settings (well i run crysis on 'gamer' b/c i got tearing on the opening cutscene but then again so did my buddy with 8800 ultras SLI'd).. i have warhammer on full settings right now
