Does anyone on Phlorph plan on getting this for the PC?

I love co-op shooters and I'd rather own this thing on the PC than the 360 (controls, community and updates being the largest three reasons) but I need to know if some of hte phlorph people will be playing this to make it worth my time otherwise I'll go for the 360 version.

I plan on getting it but don't know if my current computer can handle it. I'm trying to save up for a new computer but I dont know if I'll have it in time for the release, it could be up to a month after it comes out I finally have it (doubt it)

Too many games this fall to buy O_O

Spore, Crysis Warhead, FarCry 2, Left 4 Dead, and some others I forget.

Hadn't heard of it so I just watched some gameplay footage. I like a lot of the gameplay elements: co-op, the fact that when you're wounded you act wounded. However, I hate fast zombies. With a passon. I don't mind a few of them being fast just to keep you on your toes (like in Half-Life 2,) but when ALL of them are fast it just ruins the classic zombie mood.

I agree with fast zombies sucking, but unfortunately not everyone will follow the classic romero guidlines. That's why romero himself can't make a good movie if his life depended on it now.

I can't wait to play this with some phlorphers because it relies on teamwork so much and I dont want to play it with douchebags. I'm going to make sure I have a computer that will run this by the time it comes out, I'm going to put myself on a budget and save up 1200 for a computer in the next 4 paychecks. Unless I can build a good computer that will handle this and other games coming out in the near future for less, though I do want supreme badass.

The problem with that is that the $800 or less computer will be obsolete by the end of the year. Sometimes its good spending a few extra hundred to not have to upgrade for a while.

Yes. The co-op is very appealing if you know people who appreciate co-op. Appealing enough to disregard the fast zombies. But still, when I watched this demo (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36844.html), I nearly laughed out loud when a silly amount of zombies ran out of a very small opening. It's not scary at all. Just ridiculous, like a clown car or a Second Life spam attack. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et1Qjyq3onM)

::IN ADDITION::
Also, you don't have to shoot them in the head to kill them! What the hell is that shit?! It only takes a couple shots to the torso! They've taken a zombie survival game and turned it into a Starship Troopers survival game!

Yeah, I'll agree that the swarms get a little over the top, but I suspect we won't have much time to ponder the silliness once we're actually playing, as we'll be too busy frantically backpedalling and reloading. ;)

Also, as to the headshot thing - keep in mind this is a valve game. There WILL be mods, and I'm betting the very first one will be a headshot mod that does pretty much exactly what you'd expect. ;) Heck, it might even cure the ridiculous swarm problem too, since it's a lot harder to kill 30 zombies by shooting them all in the head, and so it'd make sense to turn down the number spawned at any one time. (Man, lookin' forward to that mod already!)

As for the shambler vs sprinter zombies... yeah, I'll agree that something is lost by having nothing but sprinters, but the fact remains that a horde of shamblers, quite frankly, either becomes A) Nonthreatening, or B) Blatantly Unfair. Either you're in the open, and can take the time to aim and outrun them, or you're in a confined area where you just get overrun. Not much in between, even with 4 players working together, and limited ammo. Shamblers might make nice flavoradditions for a little variety (the "leftovers" once you repel the main wave), but they're usually not much of a threat.

Anyhow, I'd be surprised if a sizable number of PHLORPHies didn't buy L4D. The last real co-op game I can recall was Serious Sam, and even it didn't measure up to a game like this. So no worries, in a couple months I'm sure TF2 will take a backseat and we'll all be capping some zombies. ;D

Cool, sounds like the PC route is the way to go. I only know one person on Live who would be able to play this with me and he isn't always available. But the phlorph group I'm readily familiar with and work well together with.

I agree on the fast zombies issue (Their speed in this game is borderline inhuman) but the co-op is so well designed that I can't resist.

Hopefully my PC can handle it, it's not hte most up to date thing but it gets the job done.

However my only experience with it and gaming are WoW, TF2, Portal and Starcraft.

well if there is going to be a mod that makes it only headshot, hopefully they can make them slower as well, and not cut down on the numbers. Possibly if they slow them down they can increase the numbers, because that is one of the reasons why zombies are so intense! they are coming out of every corner in such huge numbers, and won't stop unless you get that perfect shot.

PC version it is;

Why would anyone buy it on console? For that matter, why does anyone buy any shooter on console? Console shooting is like the remedial class. You get take-home tests, free homework passes, and all sorts of little cheats that make you look like you're catching up to the rest of the class, but are in fact indulging your learning disability.

Look at this video (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/39545.html), they gave the Xbox version an aim assist just so it could have the same pacing as the pc version!

Starcraft
WoW

So typically I don't get a lot of PC titles (course till reecently my PC wasn't up to snuff for the latest titles). Also most of my friends were console people so if I wanted to play with them that only left me one option.

"Gentlemen,
September 17, 2008 - Robin Walker

Well, it's been a couple of weeks since we updated the blog, and we thought it was time to let you know why we've been so quiet. The last couple of weeks we've actually been moonlighting on Left 4 Dead. While the L4D team has been focusing on finishing up the core cooperative gameplay, we've been helping them by working on their Versus mode. Versus is the recently-announced competitive mode where one team plays the Survivors and one team plays the Infected. We've learned a lot while working on TF2 in the last year, and we were able to apply some of those lessons to Versus mode. As a result, we've just finished adding critical hits, respawn waves, flawless auto-team balancing, and facestabs to L4D, while removing anything that looked remotely like a grenade.
I kid, I kid.

Now that we're wrapping up that work, we'll be returning to TF2. We've got a bunch of exciting changes coming down the pipe for the next class update. Feels good to be home again! "

haha, at least they have an awesome sense of humor. I cant wait to get a face stab in l4d!

OK! so i've left my job at EA so I think i can break NDA (or just a little at least). I got to test L4D for a day (on Xbox) with 3 other co-workers. It will live up to all the hype - trust me.

You may not think its scary but i must say, with four player co-op, there are plenty of surprise and panic moments where you are over the mic screaming "OMG OMG OMG"

its a zombie survival game not a zombie hunting game so the big numbers and their speed and abilities really make it feel like you're running for your life.

i wouldn't judge it just by the media available. I played it for only a few hours but afterwards, my co-workers and I couldn't stop talking about it for days. Its that good.

For those wondering about the system requirements...

Left 4 Dead PC System Requirements Unveiled

Valve has released the system requirements for the PC version of its anticipated shooter Left 4 Dead. The Halflife2.net forums claim to have received these requirements from Valve marketing VP Doug Lombardi:

OS: Windows Vista, XP or 2000
CPU: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 or AMD64X2 (or higher)
RAM: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
Disc drive: DVD-ROM Drive
Hard drive: At least 7.5 GB of free space
Video: Direct X 9 compatible video card (Video card must be 256 MB or more and should be a DirectX 9-compatible with support for pixel shader 2.0)
Sound: Direct X9.0c compatible sound card

Well I have to check on my video card (it barely meets TF2 requirements) but I'm definetly short on the processor front, mine is only 2 GHz instead of 3 so I might have a problem there.

No problem on the ram and hard drive space though, nor do I believe there to be a problem with the sound card.

Depends on the game and what has to be processed,

Left 4 Dead will use the CPU to run the AI amongst the physics and other aspects of the game while your running through it so that could bog your 9800 in a bottleneck.

thewiredknight

I know we can confirm 8 at least at the moment.

L4D is meant to operate on a much smaller scale. Human teams always seem to consist of 4 and the game is designed to swap their position with the zombie players after a round so it's most likely 4 on 4.

As far as the campaign goes though then it's only 4. So considering the number of us working then for campaign we'll probably have to coordinate who is doing ot when while for online we can easily all jump in.

The early release demo is out now. Just gave it a try. It's not too bad a game but there are definitely some server issues right now interrupting game play and causing lag.

The server finding system is very different than anything any of us are familiar with. This blog posts pretty much sums it up for those who are interested:
http://www.left4dead411.com/news/2008/11/whoa-whoa-server/
I'm not sure whether the server is not accounting for ping/location (which would be a major oversight) but the people it's connecting me with all have very different ping. So far not a fan of this system.

I have managed to complete both campaigns once. Seeing through walls and all the messages alerting you of the current situation have made voice chat not all that useful interestingly enough. I have found it to be a little bit easy but I am playing on normal right now so I'll try a higher difficulty later.

So if you pre-ordered the game go try out the demo and let us know what you think.

Ripskin

I preloaded it last night but had to study instead of playing, I look forward to trying it out tonight.

My only guess with that is it could be a separate system for the demo and full games. I have not read that blog post yet but maybe they will get it sorted before the final release.

I am excited either way, heard a ton of good things about it from people today.

8 players max for versus mode, 4 survivors vs 4 infected
4 players max for campaign, 4 survivors

I believe that the server operators do not get to choose their own maximum player limits. That is to say you can't choose to host versus mode only or campaign mode only. It all depends on what the matchmaking service decides is needed as far as I know.

you can run a private server and everyone can connect through the servers list through steam if i'm not mistaken. Usually it's pretty easy to just get a friends only lobby filled then have it find a dedicated server or host it yourself though.

Hopefully i can play tonight. I tried yesterday but the stupid Fry's Electronics near me didn't get their shipment yet and they are selling it $10 cheaper than anybody else.

Went through the second chapter last night with some friends, was very fun :D Killed 4 tanks lol.

Tried playing some VS but my ping shot over 1400 a few times and stayed around 800 - 1100 which was just pathetic. Half of the people on were in the same boat. VS looked fun but makes it very hard to do anything with a ping like that O_O

ripskin the vs game you played was hosted locally and not on a dedicated server, the host was laggy and couldn't support all 8 people

that being said

THIS GAME IS SO FUCKING GOOD IT MAKES ME WANNA PUNCH SOMEBODY IN THE FACE

FUCK ME IN THE GOAT ASS

Yeah I know, but thats where all my friends were and the point is to play with them :)

Played a few days ago with Sherrif and some others with a more reasonable ping and fewer spikes. Went much better.

I was hoping survival mode would be get me entertained with L4D, but turtling in a corner is still possible on a few maps. It's ok I guess but like Satan said nothing special.

I still haven't tried the versus on the other two campaigns though.

Ah. Booo.

I might give it a try again. The cpu lag issue was mostly fixed in the patch before this but vs is still not fun for me. Seems too easy for the survivors since they patched out the hardest mode. Its a server option, if people dont want to play on hard they can go elsewhere :( I liked that mode. (I only play as survivors usually. Boomer was the only infected I was good at)

And its a lot of content.

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-db9qgn99o) a mod that changes all the common infected to Teletubbies. 1:50 was my favorite.
