View Full Version : So is phlorph dead?

It seems like it's been forever since people were playing regularly on the server, has everybody moved on or something?

A lot of people play the new shooters that came out.

On the brink, I would say.
The problem is while theres still those who still play TF2, there's not enough on at once to fill the server.

sometimes I try to pop phlorph and then we have a fun little game, it seems like not many random people join anymore.. which makes it harder

Its really just a problem of getting us all on. Even if I'm playing another game, I'll stop and play TF2 just to be on Phlorph.
Hopefully the rise in users will help things out.

tf2 has been pretty boring the last few times I've played it, i'm not going to say i'm totally done with it but I dunno, it doesn't excite me that much. I'll play some more soon though i suppose, avp has been dying down and i dont know if i want battlefield bc2

Well the server is here, or if we need other games I can support it.
Thing is most of the stupid game companies are going to only "hosted" games.
I'm hoping natural selection 2 will do a linux server. It was badass and highly *nix based but they have their own engine in 2.
MW2 was a joke, bf2bc2 is again EA special "hosted ranked" servers.
AVP is windows only.
The reason CS and CS:S was so popular was because they really supported the server runners and that is going to the wayside. It's been painful to keep up a linux tf2 server, which imo your an idiot if you run a secure server on windows instead of *nix if you have the skills.
CS/S stats are actually about 50% linux.
In conclusion I'll run whatever server for you guys, but it seems that everything is going to the bullshit "ranked hosting" server model. Somewhat ironic that IW/ MW2 is folding right now.
We got alot of server, and alot of bandwith. I can't populate the server though. I'm on a couple server forums and tf2 servers are closing like candy. Everyone is doing either bfbc2 (which I like alot) or global agenda and neither can you host your own server for.
Ironically ya whats still lasting servers? CS and CS:S. They still have a massive amount of players. Maybe we can think of doing something like that?
TF2 was NEVER friendly to a community. Instant respawn where it didn't matter if you died does not make community. Games like CS where you die and half to wait and talk do. I think one of the reasons we lasted so long was because off alltalk.
Talk amongst yourselves

TF2 as a community is doing just fine, the problem is we are not there enough anymore to keep the random people coming. If the server is always empty or has a few people on it it is hard to keep it going.
It used to be populated most of the afternoon, through the evening and into the night.
Its rare now for me to come home and see it with anyone at all. While some new games come out and distract people for a while it seems like none of them have any real holding power. The other issues is school work and life outside of the server seem to be taking up some more time.
I play a lot of different games, but always check TF2 and phlorph first. The maps may stay the same but the gameplay varies if we can keep people on it like before.
When the engie update hits lots will flock back for a while. That would be a good time to try and get people on the server again. Finding the most popular custom maps and adding one or two of them to the rotation might help as long as the DL issue was resolved?
TF2 has a lot of years left in it.

I think that we as a community maybe still being affected by the Fallout (http://community.phlorph.com/showthread.php?t=1250) of the demo/soldier update.

I could see that. The sword and shield are just stupid and OP still... The pick ax is less lame but still OP... Bad update that seemed to hurt the community more.
But doing mini war's like that should be done regularly. Would spark more interest and involvement.

I played so much during that war :). I'll be available to play more as soon as I beat FFXIII. But even then, I tend to play earlier in the evening than everyone else so its hard to get on when people are trying to populate.

Yeah, TF2 really just doesn't do it for me anymore. And with all the games that have come out lately, I've even less time to play it.
It's a shame DICE decided on their special Ranked Server hosting, but on that note, me and a few friends picked up our own server for that, so we can play on it and tweak it as we please.
AvP is still fun, but the lack of *nix server support for it is just stupid, and it's more annoying that they came out and said they have no intention of including *nix support. Are they just idiots or what?
Regardless, Phlorph is still the best online gaming community/group, and just because we don't play TF2 that much anymore, doesn't mean we still can't play games together.
Also, hopefully NS2 is awesome, because that'd be fun to play with everyone. :3

The forums will go indefinitely there will always be new games. Have alot of friends here and no plans to shut it down.
The engineer update will bring some people back. Unfortunatly the WORST thing you can do to game like TF2 is to bring out updates to a single class. It has wrecked havoc every time it has happened.
You need to update all the classes at once or nothing.

I was distracted by L4D2 and I've been under a rock trying to get the new house ready to habitate. Tonight is our first night in the place, only half moved in. I miss hanging with you all though. I've been listening to Kriskast (http://www.kritzkast.com/) on my ipod to keep my TF2 fix alive. Its funny as hell. I highly recommend it.

Maybe we could have a Phlorphian L4D2 night sometime, friends only vs. mode is a lot of fun :D
Also Mephisto, BF:BC2 server isn't up yet, because of the lovely EA issue with their server hosting issues, so they've put a pause on all new servers. When it's up I'll let everyone know.

Another thing I wanted to express. Early last week a few of us few trying too populate phlorph. And many regulars were straight up hostile about phlorph period! I've never seen phlorph like this, let alone any regular. It made me wonder whether we were still a community or a bunch of players that are sick of each other

No hard feelings, if I can ask and if your team allows it, incorperate some form of ASP or phlorph into your name, to show your roots.

Gah I hate other servers some days. I was playing a game of steel at "Texas Team Players" and we were completely rolling the other team. So I figured I'd be a good sport and switch sides. After playing a bit, I noticed that our second highest player was just sitting in spawn blowing himself up, and another player was just wandering around eating sandviches. I rage quited so hard.
I don't mind if people suck, but at least put in an effort. I miss phlorph.

While we're asking for things, can we get class restrictions removed. I'd like that and would spend more time playing if I can play any class I want to again.

Should have a poll about that sometime, see if people would like it more with or without restriction. Regardless, won't be seeing me back on TF2, not with BF:BC2.

I'm not sure how the server tags are set up on phlorph, but it might be worth adding the "vanilla" server tag. Might help get some traffic. I miss phlorph tf2 quite a bit, it needs a reboot. :)
Ripskin
March 25th, 2010, 05:23 PM
It does seem the vanilla ones have the highest population on them. Even if they vote to customs.
The solid popular custom map servers usually stay high as long as they keep on top of the popular maps. The ones that get voted down get removed fast to keep them going.

Not sure what the semi-hostile reaction is about, I for one would still like to see Phlorph populated, even if I myself don't intend on playing Team Fortress 2 on it.
As the Elkor in Mass Effect might put it;
[Insinuating] If that is how you treat people, perhaps it is why Phlorph remains empty.
Jokes aside, it feels like half the regular Team Fortress 2 crowd moved onto different games, so even if the game were to be fun to me again, I don't think it'd be the same experience as it used to be.
