NO. You may NOT like Ike.
Unless Ike is a turtle. Then I request that you are not exclusive in your turtle-liking, and in fact like them all.

Used to make 'em myself. No soldering iron now. The tubes are from 1958. They told me about Ike.

How exactly does such a device work, and how would one build it themselves?

The design is pretty simple. Tubes have a ton of advantages over transistors and IC's for amplifying the audio spectrum at the cost of extra bulk, heat, and power requirements. Here's the basic design for this amp and the ones I built, though these have a lot of extra little bits added (like low-impedance compatibility): http://gilmore2.chem.northwestern.edu/projects/showfile.php?file=cmoy5_prj.htm
Costs about $100 to build or buy, sounds better than a $600 design.
The SOHA is a nice hybrid design to get started if you're already good with electronics. You won't die if you mess up (runs at 20vdc, not 400). Start with a CMoy amp if you have little experience soldering.

Nice, tube amps give such a nice look and sound. Makes me miss my home theater install job...

I should pick up an Oscilliscope/Function Generator/etc. You don't get those in an Automotive electronics shop...
I wish I had some extra cash, that seems like a really cool project.

I can solder, but reading electric diagrams I do not have more than one guided attempt at.

I couldn't, either. You can get pre-made PCB's for a lot of these projects with nicely matched parts lists. R4 = 10ohms, C2 = .2uf, etc. As long as you have a good sense of logic and can follow directions. Here's the latest version of my first tube amp. http://www.glassjaraudio.com/product.sc?productId=22&categoryId=6 The only projects I would discourage are the SMD types (alien DAC). They are very difficut to solder.

Your finish work is astounding.
I will gladly help any of you read a schematic if needed. It is a worthless talent that I have learned quite well.
Soldering. I used to do a whopper full. IC (http://progshop.com/images/products/chips/QFP44-500-344.jpg) I used to de-solder and resolder 80 pin plus versions of these things. I don't have the ability to see such small things anymore.
I hope to build some things for fun when I get moved into our new home, right now I'm stuck doing unfun things like plumbing and financing.

I can't handle that now, either. Think you could manage a pad four times the size of those leads? Try the Alien DAC w/presoldered PCM2702. I was astounded at the improvement over stock PC sound cards IF you have an output amp. Since then I've switched to the EMU404USB DAC, but it's not too much better.
Also, I neither like nor dislike Turtles. Please contact my PR representative for further comment.
